Dawn davis, director, Founder, CEO

PhD, BCBA

Dr. Dawn Davis earned her PhD in Educational Psychology with a focus on Applied Behavior Analysis and Direct Instruction teaching methodology from Georgia State University, Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education, in fall 2010. Dr. Davis is a board-certified behavior analyst and the founder and CEO of New Day ABA Therapy and New Day Learning and Behavior Strategies, Inc. (New Day LABS).

Dr. Davis combines 30 years of educational and behavioral experience in clinical and applied environments. She is a former special education teacher for a Cobb County school psycho-educational program where she taught middle and high-school students diagnosed with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities (MID-MoID) and severe emotional, behavioral disorders (SEBD). There, she discovered a deep passion for effective strategies to help students with communication and emotional and behavioral regulation. She recognized that many students’ “severe problem behaviors” functioned as finely honed communication skills they had developed. When she started graduate school at GSU, she dug into the expansive research base that showed an inverse relationship between functional communication skills and pervasive problem behaviors. Students with the most difficulties with problem behaviors also tend to have the least effective functional communication skills, and the older the student, the stronger the relationship is shown to be.

While obtaining her doctorate in Educational Psychology at Georgia State, she received clinical experience at the Marcus Autism Center (early intervention, severe behavior, and feeding centers) and applied experience in Cobb, Fulton, Forsyth, and Cherokee county special needs classrooms (ASD, MID, and MoID). Her research activities and publications are in the areas of Functional Communication Training (FCT) in classrooms with the least restrictive behavioral strategies, teaching phonetic reading skills to students with moderate intellectual disabilities using DI teaching methodology, innovative statistical research methods for best demonstrating the effectiveness of instructional strategies on acquisition of reading skills, and adult literacy.

Dr Davis is passionate about her extensive educational and behavioral experience to provide comprehensive services to children and families. The fields of ABA and education are too often isolated and are not mutually exclusive. With her dedicated team at New Day ABA, she has recently developed the Little Sunshines program that ensures individualized ABA therapy AND prerequisite school readiness and academic skills development.
